Bob Stevens “On Set” 10/25/18

When we shoot in an interior location, especially a home, we are required to protect every surface that we might make contact with. The list includes floors, walls, and in this case, stairs. This may look like a disorganized effort, but I assure you that it was thought out and planned. You can see, just below the window, a hint of the moulding and beautiful detail that our PA’s carefully covered. This staircase was just inside the front door, and I noticed it first thing this morning. I stopped, gave it a look, and shot a few frames. Interesting, but not memorable. By the time we were wrapping out at the end of a long day, darkness had fallen. As I dragged my tired bones to the crew shuttle, I looked one more time as I passed the stairway. As Bob Dylan famously said ‘Things Have Changed’. The lighting which was not even in play earlier was now rendering a macabre range of textures and tones perfectly in tune with our haunted holiday coming next week. The trees seen through the window had an eerie dimension that was also not present in the light of day. One of the facets of my life as a photographer that I never cease to be amazed by: as often as not, uniqueness and serendipity align to provide delightful delicacies as long as I continue to look. And look. And look.

Thanks David! I was on set all day and it was challenging to find an image. This one hit me in the fact when I walked in the door of our home location.

“macabre range of textures” is exactly right. I like how the drape could be paper, or tin, or cellophane, and the steps could be metal, or stone, or lead, or gold bars, and the ambiguity makes me linger over it

Hi Jennifer! This was a labor of love late in the evening after a VERY long day. Thanks for your observations!
