I was recording a momentous celebration for a friend of ours, when I heard a loud cry behind me. I turned around with my camera to my eye and shot three frames, rapid fire. Tools like auto focus, built-in light metering and a motor drive, allow me to capture an image without thinking too much about the technical side of things. I know that had I not simply responded to a stimulus, but instead thought about what I was seeing, this photograph would not exist. There was a time, a long time, when a moment like this would come and go without being recorded in my camera. Supported by the hardware advances, I have made adjustments in how I take pictures. I often respond rather than analyze; react instead of considering. My body of work has broadened by making these adjustments. “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, is a famous painting depicting a moment of seeming anguish. This image of Brooke is just the opposite. She is expressing boundless joy. I chose the title to drive home the contrasting experiences. Photography my way, offers the opportunity to capture fleeting moments like this one.
