Jeremy Green “Out There” 06/01/16

The sign said “Ely 220 miles”. That intrigued me. The road went off across the lunar Nevada landscape to infinity. With a couple of days to kill between assignments in Las Vegas and a nice rental car with a big engine, I took to the road to go be “out there”…maybe take some pictures for myself for a change. I lit a fine cigar and set the cruise control to 95 MPH. It’s a kind of blessed solitude. The Motel 6 in Ely, Nevada was where the car took me. Another kind of blessed solitude for me is making a picture out of nothing, alone with my own devices. As a photographer, I remember those times on a deeper level. There are the photographs, some more successful than others, to mark the moments. The bizarre room decor became a setting for a photograph, but that wasn’t enough. The car out the window became another element to the story when I drew open the curtain, but that wasn’t enough either. I set the self-timer, ran out to the car, and turned on the map-reading light. I wish I had thought to bring a model, but that would have been a different experience.
