Hippolyte Bayard is credited with the first selfie, titled, “Self-Portrait as a Drowned Man” 1840. Love that title… I use to do a lot of self portraits with a serious content. Lately I just laugh at myself, and today is no different with this diptych.  I did start the day with serious notions but as the day went on I felt a little chuckle was needed. The use of multiple images means the use of the full phrase “Self-Portrait” even if humor is present. This image can be viewed as black humor. The viewer gets to decide the number of chuckles, if any, are awarded.

The stage is a Pee-Wee Herman like home, full of interesting visual things, but not valuable. First image is Jenny dressed for a typical causal morning with adorable shoe acting abilities. Up next is the grumpy old man behind the curtain, who is bored from waiting to go on the stage-of-life with his one realization.  “Honey! What if we are not late bloomers!”

In homage to Elliot Erwitt, Duane Michaels, and William Wegman, etc

Im not sure I was clear in my statement above so Im adding these thoughts and clarification.

The diptych is a self portrait of my wife’s and my relationship in marriage. We tend to be jovial and on stage entertaining to each other with humor and romantic movies quotes. We are both talented but unknown artists who often think of the future financial challenges ahead. We have probably held on to the idea that something will come our way and things will change for the better, way too long. What if we are not Late bloomers, is are hidden fear speaking out from the curtain.

sidenote: 116 degrees here for the last few days and one of our two 16 year old AC units went out last night. But the show must go on!

Nice play David. Love Jenny’s bloomers.

Not sold on the soft focus on the left side though.

I shot the pic of me n the rock first then decided to explore other possible single images from my iPhone for my play. Then I came up with the marriage of the two. The iPhone shot was blurred to help it but it never occurred that soft focus edges of one don’t match the other. Considered two images to be separate in style but with a similar background, I think I’ll explore that technique more in the future. I can justify it by men are from Mars and women from Venius. The atmosphere is clearer on Mars and less romantic for old and grumpy guys. Cheers
