This young lady is the acorn who fell from the acorn who fell from my tree. The moment she saw the ocean and beach, she started ‘talking’ excitedly. Granted, a special interpreter is helpful to totally understand everything she says at this stage, but then words can be overrated. I can say that as I certainly use them often and copiously. I chose a shutter speed and aperture combination which would drop the background out of focus, and the games began. One of the special things about this shot for me, is how Genevieve’s hand is covered with sand and her Mother’s is not. The gentle grip of an adult, guiding her offspring to safety and eventual ‘cleaning’, is evident and precious. The light was soft, with that feel we once called ‘cloudy bright’, from the description on the paper which accompanied rolls of film back in the day. This child definitely lights up the world…and me.
