I was returning from a walkabout, searching for a memorable photograph to make. Not having found anything interesting, I decided to go back to my apartment and regroup. I don’t often take the alternative set of stairs in the courtyard and when I did, came face to face with this door. Apartment Six is directly below mine, and I have only glimpsed the occupant in the several months he’s lived there. He seems to be quite secretive and his doormat is littered with leaves as if it’s never been moved. Our floor plans are identical which results in me (and him I suppose) hearing every flush of the commode and the creaky shower valve as it’s turned on and off. To make matters more weird, when he’s been home for a while, there seems to be a faint but unidentifiable odor that creeps through the holes in the wall below my bathroom vanity. The longer I stared at this anonymous door and the hard shadows which run across it, the more interesting it became. When I downloaded and processed the capture, I took extra care to add mystery and ‘creepiness’ to the tonal range and feel. From the peephole to the gritty textures, worn paint and distressed surfaces, I feel this is a perfect representation of all that I do not know about what goes on inside. I plan to keep it that way.
