My play today is an exercise with the abstract. Viewed small this image could represent just about anything. Viewed larger the texture of the surface starts to reveal a bit more information. I like the interplay between the curved dots and the planes, and the way the light delineates the two planes adding depth to the photograph. The dots have the appearance to me as music notes on a page. The angle of the shadows on the raised dots make them appear to be reaching for the light. As the shadows of the dots shorten near the right side of the frame, they give a hint that instead of what appears  on first inspection to be sitting on a flat surface has some curve to it. The lower row of dots fade away into the shadow like a bird’s eye view, late at night of people outside a nightclub waiting in line to get in, lit only by a small light from an alley. Creating the image in black & white further pushes the abstract narrative in a Film Noir direction, dramatic and moody. I enjoy the texture and mystery of this image. Dots On A Surface, “What is it…” you say. The idea that this image could represent countless things to many people brings me joy.
