Bob Stevens “Metal Sink” 02/22/19

After the seemingly mandatory checking of e-mail, Facebook and Instagram, there I sat. Not being a huge fan of visiting the doctor’s office I began to fidget and look around, realizing that I was in an alien environment, sans aliens….as far as I know. Everywhere, in all directions, there were objects which don’t appear in my daily life. As I walked around, I spotted a stainless steel sink. The closer I looked, the more fascinated I became. The multitude of lights in the ceiling, combined with seemingly endless facets and shapes created on the counter, sides and bottom of the basin, became a playground. Every small movement and POV change of my camera, resulted in shifts in highlights, shadows and shapes. I confess to have shot many, many frames: kid in visual candy store I was. This one spoke to me, and I cannot explain that. Removing any and all color from the shot, and giving it a good HDR kick in the tonal pants, I landed on the image you see here. On occasions like this, I am reminded that I can turn the mundane into the extraordinary with the tools I possess…combined with a vision which most of the time, possesses me. I really love being a photographer.

Nicely done Bob. Its pretty easy to make pretty look pretty, its another thing altogether to take the mundane and make it fascinating.

Thanks Russ. In transparency (not the film), I confess to seeing something at the time that I knew was raw material, and would need post production to being it to life. It’s really remarkable how changes in contrast and tonality create new realities. This is one of the biggest reason I don’t ‘miss film’.

Very awesome Bob Stevens. If I was there I would have tried to shove you out of the way so I could have a crack at it. Love the artist notes too! What were you on?
