High Tide Full Moon

Bob Stevens “High Tide Full Moon” 12/24/18

I have been fascinated with the night sky from an early age, and in particular the Moon. I was building telescopes at the age of 12, reading science fiction and dreaming of what it’s like ‘up there’. Around the same time, I started surfing. Living close to the beach and also loving to fish, I was very aware of the tides and the Moon’s influence on their ebb and flow. The highest and lowest tides are always at the times of the New Moon and Full Moon. Years later, decades actually, I’m often up at sunrise to capture the setting Moon over the ocean. This image was taken at dawn; it was cold and damp. The high tide had rushed in and swept the sand away, leaving this natural pool. These colors are slightly exaggerated, but not much, as this is what happens when the two Luminaries in our sky trade places in their starring roles. Warm and Cool. Pink and Blue. Yang to her Yin, The Sun, without whose fiery heat we could not exist, and His glorious fill card, the Moon. They dance in unison and exchange positions every 28 days. Get up early the next time there’s a Full Moon and see what happens while most of the world sleeps.
