This photo was taken the day my mother died, which was also the day of the total eclipse of the sun. Soon after she left, I held two of her kitchen colanders to the sky to see the lights and shadows of tiny suns and moons tumbling through the colander holes onto her driveway. I don’t remember how I managed to hold the two colanders and the camera to shoot this, but I wanted to record it both for the magical sight of that rare moment and for the significance of the day. Sometimes a photo carries more than the eye alone sees.
