Light And Shadow

Inside a building in Santa Barbara the floor is covered with this tile. The shapes, patterns, and color are enough for this flooring to be an interesting view. Certain times of the day the sun pours in and casts the shadow of the window framing. Since that framing has ornate portions those imprints are left in the shadow areas. I am always drawn to shadows. It is the shadow that is the most interesting part. It gives things shape and placement. Chiaroscuro is the term given to the shading of objects in paintings making them look more three dimensional. It is really what separated Renaissance art from the previous art period. Artists began adding that shading, or shadows in, creating depth to a two-dimensional surface. I’ve had clients who would ask how I made their factory look so good. I would say I hide all the dirty parts in the shadows. For me, what is hidden is the mystery, what’s in the shadow keeps us wondering. The difference, for me, between erotic photography and pornography is what the viewer doesn’t and does see.

Richard Holzhueter I wouldn’t recognize him if I bumped into him. If you can’t find Cindy I doubt if I could, even with living here.
