Given our heightened awareness of the nuclear threat in 2018, I thought this image to be an appropriate post for the day. It is not all that often that political commentary enters into the DPG format, and I am content to offer a reality check via this image.

There are two “world leaders” in this explosive dance, seemingly indifferent to humanity’s greater good and are eager to posture with spophomoric name calling and vitriolic hyperbole. It amazes me that here, in 2018, we again face a 1950’s era crisis, 68 years later.

Once again my orientation in photography has more to do with communicating ideas rather than selling pretty pictures. This presents an inherent dilemma in my experience. On the one hand, I have to be true to my own voice and style… on the other, I also have a desire to reach an audience, who seem preoccupied with pretty pictures!

No photographers were hurt filming this “explosion”.

Of course this is not a nuclear explosion, rather a manipulated frame from a series I created, photographs of ink in water. The image is rotated, inverted and colorized. It is an amazing doppelgänger of the real thing, and quite an unexpected result from the combination of these two liquids.
