Early in my career, fascinated by the images of Henri Cartier Bresson, I roamed the streets of LA looking for stories in the faces of strangers. Later I repeated this journey in other states and eventually countries. As I planned a trip to India, there was a moment when because of limitation on luggage etc. I almost did not take a ‘real camera’. After all, I would have my phone. This photo is one I firmly believe that could not have been captured with anything but a genuine camera, and in this case, with a zoom lens. As I rounded a corner in a crowded industrial area, I came upon this weaver. He and I spied one another at the same instant. My 24-70mm was already racked out to the long end. I pressed the shutter, motor drive assisted, and captured this frame and one other as I walked by. As I processed this today, adding color and atmosphere from my memory of the smell of dye and yarn, the man’s glare disturbed me just a bit. What was he thinking? What did he think of me? A photographer’s job is to capture the world around and beg these questions to be asked. I’m a willing participant in that quest.
