Robert Nease “Lucky” 09/12/17

I waited for the afternoon light to be in position in the sky and made a little set to put the dog on to keep Him somewhat corralled. Using natural light and a large diffuser as a reflector the shoot began. The feeling during the session was that of a small country circus, the only thing missing was the music and a clown. If anyone was watching the antics going on just to get the right “Expression” from my “Model”…Well maybe the clown was there and I have a feeling it was me. Not sure how “Lucky” began his life as a dog because our relationship with him started only after my son witnessed this little guy being hit by a car and left by the side of the road. Immediately Chris, my son, took this dog to our Vet with a subsequent operation for a broken hip, which was followed up by weeks of rehab. It was not too long before we realized what a incredible powerhouse this little dog was. Trust was established early on between my son and Lucky. After all the healing was complete He was like a race car with turbo boost, and jokingly someone called Him 110. He always gives 110% of his energy in everything he does. Lucky seems to jump with the thought that the parachute will just appear. Running and keeping up with His big adopted sister who is a Husky is Lucky’s joy in life, along with chasing tennis balls. This is somewhat of a glimpse of the shoot as I remember it.  Some people think that “No good deed goes unpunished.” But I prefer to think that that one act of kindness eventually comes back to you ten fold. After 200 plus captures for this shot, I believe this to be true.

Could’ve. Would’ve. Should’ve. The procrastinator’s try-fecta.

Hello. Len here. I was Jay Ahrend’s subject for yesterday the 11th. Yesterday the 11th of 2017. And, following a trio of seriously formidable musicians, to have my shaggy-haired self followed by a cute little big-eyed puppy dog named Lucky was, I must admit, just…

Perfect.

We lost Jay just over a month ago. We lost Liz last October, nearly a year, already. Both passed at home, with people who, touched by their light and their love, are better for it to this day.

When Liz was still in the hospital, the pictures pinned on the wall were not of her kids or grandkids, or of her husband Jimmy… (Liz and I were married in ’68, she and Jimmy in ’87.

“She’s my best friend’s girl, she used to be mine.” Yeah.)

No, the pictures pinned on the wall were of Delilah and Mona, a brown/white parti-colored Cocker and a black Great Dane/Shetland Pony mix that’s just… Huge! (I jest. And I believe she might indeed be spelled “DeLayla” or something like that. But anyway…)

That original coulda-woulda-shoulda was… Maybe I should’ve brought Liz a print of Lucky and a verbal/visual explanation. She would’ve gotten a kick out of it. I don’t know. I just didn’t want it to be about me. Liz will always be the very best.

=====

So while I’ve still got all y’all on the line…

Shouts out to Diane, Jay’s better half. And to Bob Stevens, whom I had the pleasure and privilege of working with some four decades ago. (Grey? Or JWT? Not “CWS” but “CRS.”)

Shouts out… To the late, great, digital pioneering photog Ron Hussey and his forever partner Annie Proffitt — another close friend of Jay’s…

Full circle.

Much love,

-Len
