Today my eye was attracted to this Turrid shell.  The shape of the spiracle cone is built so that it looks like one layer could fit inside another if it could collapse. It’s an iconic object created by a supreme being that is impossible to improve on.  Most photographers will immediately think of Edward Weston and Ruth Bernhard when they see this shell.  Its not a beautiful shell, for it looks like its been sandblasted for some time in the ocean. I think, and it could be argued, that this combination of light, surface, composition, and post processing has made a new and improved two dimensional  DBM creation.  My efforts today however, are not better than the original shell when it was hosting a sea snail and contributing to its environment, and not better than a photographic image that has earned it’s a place in Art history.  But this is the best shell I have shot so far, and that is my goal.
