Killer Workout Stairs

I have not been out on these stairs for several years. They are on 4th Street in Santa Monica. They are steep and mean. My thighs start burning just thinking about working out there. You walk at your first introduction, run for a while, then, drenched with sweat, hope you don’t pass out in front of all these finely-tuned athletes, as you reach for the summit. You step up a good 60 degree incline and rise 500 – 700 feet from one street level to the next. I had the opportunity to photograph my son and his girlfriend exercising on the steps. They are in there 20s, a perfect age for this vigorous, get your heart-racing, pulse-pounding challenge. I had only photographed a single athlete on the stairs. Adding another person to the mix is usually good. In this case Easton and his girlfriend, Kendall, were good sports and didn’t complain about the level of difficulty. They are both active physically. I was calling directions as they came towards me.”Easton, slow down, click, click, click, Kendall, come a little closer to Easton, click, click, click, get one step closer to Easton, click, click, click.” While they are moving in an odd dance up the stairs, I am acutely aware of everything in my frame while composing on the fly. I am in my element when it appears to be totally chaotic and in a way, the world slows down for just enough time for me to make my final adjustments, and click, click, click, the pixels are saved to the memory card.

This is a site for 10 photographers playing a daily photo game. I will look up what you suggested. Thanks for looking. We've been doing this now in our 5th year. Lots of great images.

I will look up your suggestion. Thanks.
