Jeremy Green “Boys of Summer” 10/29/16

This shade of the past surfaced in a rummage through an attic trunk not long ago. My Little League baseball hat from the Churchville Tigers, circa 1961. I played first base and/or catcher for the team. I was better at playing baseball than I was at penmanship. The funny self-identifying scrawl undoubtedly was made during the long trip in a station wagon, loaded with brothers and friends, over bumpy and hilly country roads to the playing field in Churchville, Md. This is the same Little League squad that a few years later produced Cal Ripken, Jr. who grew up in the next town over and later became one of American baseball’s greatest players in history. Tonight game 4 of the World Series will be played in Chicago by the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. This relic from my boyhood brought a smile to my face and then a laugh when I found it, permanently flat as a pancake, ready to be scanned on my flatbed scanner.
