Gestalt means, an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. That’s what a photograph is as well. Everything that is visible or suggested in a picture makes up that whole.  Frequently, photographers rely on simplification or eliminating distractions from inside the frame. That’s what I did here. This man has so much going on with his green tattoos, blue bicycle helmet, and yellow shirt, I wanted to cut down on the compositional elements to keep the viewer’s attention on those things. Yet at the same time, I did not want to use just a simple background. Finding this red garage door with its horizontal lines was the perfect answer, and it finished off the primary color scheme I was working with.
