For the last few years one of my personal projects has been photographing flowers. I always carry my camera with me to record them when and wherever I find them. What I like to do is work quickly, usually not dwelling on a particular subject too long, a minute or two at most, but once in a while an hour goes by before I know it. The challenge here is to create memorable and pleasing photos that incorporate the basics of color, composition and detail. The image’s color will be influenced by the temperature and direction of the light source as well as the subject’s surroundings. As much attention is paid to the design or composition of the featured subject mater as to all the other elements in the background and foreground. One tool the photographer has that is important to the composition process is the use of the f-stop which controls the image’s depth of field. It can help isolate and separate the subject from it’s surroundings through sharp and soft focus. Intricate details are often hidden from the naked eye and are only reveled once the photograph is enlarged. It truly is another world.
