Continuing the musical thread here at the Daily Photo Game. The musician theme was intriguing to me, but even more than that, by what means could I contribute my conceptual viewpoint in this ongoing Game narrative. The preceding image had two musicians in it and for some reason, these dual figures sparked a thought in my mind, what could I create that might play off of that pairing? I flashed on the nature of many performers, the quieter home life where much of the creativity originates, and the public life which can be about sex, drugs and rock and roll. I was interested in revealing this duality in my subject. I shot this image today with the willing help of my neighbor Cronin Tierney, a singer songwriter and all around good guy. The guy on the left opened for Iron Butterfly, The Pogues, Canned Heat and more recently, Los Lobos in August 2015. The guy at right is the guy I know, quiet, unassuming and a talented songwriter. They are of course, the same guy. We worked on two different setups, this one and a more traditional rock and roll type portrait. I chose this one, it says something more about the photographer than what might be communicated in a traditional portrait, which would be more about him… appropriate if commissioned to do so, but in the context of this Game, I believe it is about the photographer’s vision. I think the image has a bit of a surreal bent to it, which satisfies my desire to elevate my work beyond the expected. Turning him to look at camera, while his doppelgänger looks on, adds a curious twist to the image. A sense of knowing presence which makes it work all the more deeply.
