I was glad to see that self-portraits were still in the Game, because I made this photograph last night in anticipation of my turn. It’s appropriate. Aside from some brief visits from old friends, I’ve been by myself here for a month, thoroughly enjoying being Peter Pan in Never Neverland out on this slim island that I’ve been coming to for almost all my life. Tomorrow I will be walking the streets of the upper west side on the island of Manhattan, and the contrast of experiences could not be greater. This is a simple place where it’s all about being outside in the light – solar light, star light, moonlight, firelight, and sometimes even the light from the flame of a space vehicle launched towards the stars from a pad not 5 miles away on this same spit of land. And sound! The ocean’s thrumming rhythm is ubiquitous. It penetrates and dictates everything. Here, anything metallic is gobbled up by salt air and water, and the rest is bleached pale by the sun’s radiation, but the nights are as dramatic and powerful as the days. In this place I am self aware. Like this photograph, I’m significant but also insignificant…I love that!
