I recently visited the 26^th annual Civil War Days at Huntington Beach’s Central Park. It is the perfect location with lots of trees and open spaces for this ‘free to the public’ gathering of enthusiasts. As I wandered around from one tent encampment to the next, it was between the battle reenactments, that I came across this all to familiar speaker. The historical actor was holding a large crowd of park visitors in awe with his smooth delivery and gift of knowledge of his subject’s ideas and historical speeches. Finding an advantage point without “modern day” tourists in the frame was a challenge but being tall paid off. A candid and animated image like this stopping the action was never a possibility back then because of the long exposure times required to make a photograph. But if they had our modern equipment and technology I feel this is what President Lincoln would have looked like at one of his speeches caught mid-gesture. To give the photo its vintage look I opened up the shadows, converted it to B&W, used Filter-Lens Correction-Custom-Vignette as well as Blur Tilt/Shift, changed to a sepia tone in Image-Adjustments-Photo Filter and worked with Dodge, all tools found in Photoshop. Giving what I feel is a satisfying look of the past and a record of an interesting day spent in the park.
