The Act of Discovering

My first foray with a new medium format camera was a little awkward. The native 4:3 aspect ratio is more to my liking, but my unfamiliarity with this camera’s controls and its lack of forgiveness of haste is making me slow down and approach things more methodically. It requires a different way of seeing. Spontaneity is not part of it. It’s more like shooting with a view camera in that framing, focus, and camera steadiness must be deliberate. As a result, much of what I have shot so far seems at least lacking some serendipity. But oh!…the image quality is like nothing I’ve ever seen in digital photography. Although that quality will not survive downsampling for online display, it’s there for me. As my experience with this new format increases, I may find a place for it in several upcoming assignments, even though the file sizes are impractically enormous. It certainly won’t be replacing my full frame format gear, but more practice will reveal how I may use it. The beauty is in the act of discovering.

So spit it out….what medium format is it?? I post 1080 to DPG, but on my FB, Instagram, and anywhere else on the WWW, I use 2048. Now for the critical part, a fantastic graphic is perfectly aligned with the frame, with nowhere to enter or leave. Those vibrant colours take me away from a prison and place me in a queue for a concert, less depressing. thank you

    David,
The Fujifilm GFX 100RF. It’s a beauty. It’s a contradiction in design in that it makes like it’s a hand-held street camera but its lens is slow and IBIS is lacking. I thought of you when I was writing the notes, wondering if you use a medium format camera.
