Don’t Try This

While driving. I have my iPhone on the seat next to me. If I see an interesting shot and I am able to take it without endangering myself or others, then I will press the shutter button. You are looking at the 405 freeway moving (that’s a joke) south and north. I was driving east on the Santa Monica Freeway and there is a transition road that curves high and banks to the left. You cannot see the complete highway so if you are moving fast you may be forced to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the person in front of you. This transition road takes you to the 405 north. I also noticed how if traffic does come to a halt, and I am in the far left lane with my window down, I should be able to balance the phone on the driver’s door and use the open window frame to keep it steady. Obviously, once cars start moving, I put the iPhone down. I am adjusting the composition on the fly, maneuvering the point of view to include the car just ahead of me, and trying to keep the horizon straight. I envisioned the shot without the car in front of me, so that turned out to be a happy bonus. The car ended up improving the composition by adding to the layers. You only get about 10 seconds and maybe squeeze a few more moments before your composition falls apart. The color of the sky is reflecting smoke from all the fires we had been having. The wind was blowing the ashes north clearing the skies from the south. If I was to turn around, difficult with a seatbelt on, you would see blue sky. If I am the passenger I have more control over what I can capture. If you see a guy waving his arms around and telling his driver to stop, go left, follow that red car, STOP! red head ahead. etc. Give him space! He just might include you in the shot. But getting a model release is difficult when you are moving at 70 miles an hour.

This shot really appeals to me, the energy and color…looks like a movie set.
