As an artist I’ll get an idea in my head and then go about trying to create it. From time to time, the idea changes as I get further into it. It may change because of what was actually available at the time or just serendipity. In this case I had an idea. A very complicated idea. It started when I knew I would be visiting one of my favorite places to shoot. It is a lake in Wisconsin. I’ve done many preplanned photographs there. This idea of a ladder coming out of the lake was part of a bigger thought. That got changed as I was gathering the elements and putting everything together. Yes, this is a composite with two basic elements. The ladder and the surface of the lake. As the artist, I want my work to ask questions and suggest narrative. I think I have succeeded.
