I have always thought that found items possess their own unique story, a history of who owned them and what they were used for. A “Hermes Baby” typewriter owned by John Steinbeck or brushes used by Picasso, the value of an object is increased by it’s provenance. This single glove I found recently was one of my Mother’s gardening gloves. Possibly only of value to me but nonetheless a unique find. Just about every day she worked in her garden until her mid 90’s. Direct sunlight slightly low in the sky diffused by wispy clouds was chosen to show texture in the glove and add some contrast. The blue color of the glove contrasts with the warmer background and the pattern of the background increases the separation of the textured glove and speaks to the dirt still evident on the palm and fingers. Finding this artifact made me feel like a Jr. archaeologist, the glove left behind as evidence of someone’s existence, left as information for a story. As a photographer/artist I believe we have a responsibility to document, record history, to tell a visual story. This has always been a great privilege for me.
