Sometimes subjects appear, seemingly out of nowhere. As I approached a courtyard, I was looking around on ‘the ground level’. Not finding anything interesting, I turned to walk away. At the last minute, I saw this man on the top floor of the building next door. Apparently he had been watching me as I walked around the area. I whipped my camera up in his direction, and was able to get off one frame before he turned and went inside his home. I did not have time to zoom in, and capture him as large in the frame as I would have liked to. As I began to process this image, the noise which comes along with cropping in bothered me. And then, I began to feel that it added a ‘grit’ to the scene…so I emphasized it! One of my favorite black and white films was a stock named ’T-Max 3200’ for it’s high speed and sensitivity. I de-saturated the color as a last step in an homage to that emulsion. Kodak has recently brought that film back to life. I must give it another shot!
