Human Tadpoles

Inspiration can come from anywhere. I met Ray Bradbury for the first time when I was in 6th grade. Over the years I saw him again and again, speaking and signing books. I would often ask myself, “What would Ray Bradbury do?” I try to mix up the media just to get thinking in a new way. Reading his books took me to far away and exciting places in the universe. He wrote about Venice Beach, which I knew well as a kid hanging out there. He lived in Venice for a while. He not only wrote science fiction, but novels and short stories, plays, and scripts. I was astounded he didn’t drive. In LA without a car, how could he survive? The Illustrated Man was a wonderful story about a tattooed man whose tattoos moved and told stories right on the man’s skin. It took place in Venice on the boardwalk. His book Fahrenheit 451 was named after the temperature at which paper burned. In the forward to the book he wrote, ”If they give you lined paper, write the other way.” I think about that phrase all the time. In creating this image I was struck with the idea of showing humans small and scaled up in size. I envisioned them as little tadpoles against large giant humans. Thinking of a different world where the species came in different sizes, I went out and found miniature people in swimsuits. I wonder how Ray would have approached this idea?

Eliot Crowley’s trout and hands image he calls, “Catch and Release.”
He inspired me to dig deep and come up with a new concept.
Bob Stevens turn to explore an idea that’s been incubating in his creative mind.
