I recommend going out shooting with other photographers, for you are forced to see new sites.  Everyone takes a turn suggesting where the car will go and you never know what is between one point and another.  New and different sites are always good and challenging.

Well on one trip, we happened to really step out of our wheelhouse and meandered upon a youth rodeo. This is one of the very few good images that I got, it fell far from anything I have in my portfolio, but there was something that I liked about it.  I was in a new arena totally unaware of any rules about how a rodeo picture should look; rider’s hand position, and horses ears or leg positions.  All I knew was that I wanted to fill the frame with horse and rider in action.  This gringo quickly realized that the 24-70mm lens was way too short for any action.

I got this image of an amazing young girl handling her horse just after crossing the finish line.  I thought her eyes and the horses eyes had real interest, along with the triangle shape formed by her hands, the leads, and with the horses head.

Each type of photographic genre or classification requires a different skill set from the photographer, that must be studied and learned over time. One shoot at a rodeo does not make me a photographer in that genre by any means. This was an attempt and a fail at something new, but we had fun, and we are now off in another direction.
