Black Beauty

Robert Nease “Black Beauty” 05/25/17

The choice of a black Calla Lily to be the object of my desire to photograph for my post was made after viewing several other different colored callas. I decided to go with the one with less color but more drama. Funny thing is, it is neither truly black or even a lily. All the white, black, yellow and other colored lilies were miss named a long time ago (18th Century) and though eventually named correctly as a part of the Araceae family of plants, the “Calla Lily” name just stuck. During the process of making this image I thought of the work of Georgia O’Keeffe which motivated me to look at this particular flower with fresh eyes. Making several lighting adjustments, each time revealed more of the uniqueness of this dark flower. Observing the symmetry as I positioned the calla and worked with the light all the time making an effort to simplify this piece I was creating. “Come in closer, even closer” was my thought….desiring a more intimate view, and then it all seemed to me to be balanced. The word “Calla” is a Greek word for beautiful and the most common meaning for calla lilies is purity, holiness, and faithfulness. Black Callas are thought of as a symbol of mystery and elegance. I chose my Black Calla for it’s inherent drama and beauty.

Thanks David, glad you enjoy the image. This flower lends it’s self well for playing with the deep tones.
