One of my favorite places to shoot is Hollywood Blvd and especially at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Tourists of all nationalities come to compare the size of their hands and feet with the famous movie stars’ prints . You’ve made it in Hollywood if you are asked to place your hand and foot prints in cement along with your signature at Grauman’s. Equally filled with lots of characters is the Venice boardwalk. It being slightly overcast and cool in temperature today, I opted for more people in Hollywood. Street photography can be challenging. Events happen quickly. While the world is swirling around us in chaos you are judging and changing compositions instantly. Some of the great street photographers like Garry Winogrand moved about the scene as if they were invisible. Winogrand often included tourists looking at maps while trying to figure out where to go next. He usually had two or more little dramas occurring in his shot as well as a background that read urban. Cartier-Bresson chooses his background first, then waits for something to happen to complete his composition. Of the many shots I took I liked this one the best, as you can clearly see George Clooney’s signature and his hand and foot prints. It’s a quicker read visually to be able to make out a name. I have no idea what the two women behind the female subject are doing with the same hand gesture. I didn’t notice that when I was shooting. I also didn’t “see” all the people drinking coffee.
