Into the Blue by Eliot immediately brought up visions of liquid blue water, Mark Rothko’s abstract paintings, the Color Field painters of the late 60s, the Light and Space LA artists of the 60s and 70s, and among them the incredible James Turrell’s light environments now showing at LACMA. The challenge was how to depict color in a mass we look at called “air” in two dimensions. Hiroshi Sugimoto has depicted air and ocean water moving in black and white images. Some look like black and white Rothkos. I decided last night to visit the Pacific Ocean at dusk and to show the color of the entire sky dome in my shot. It was a moisture-laden sky. The palm tree gives us something to focus on. A nod to Eliot’s abstract blue piece, and a wink to Ken’s circles.
