Blue Fier “Cold Storage” 09/23/18

2018_09_23 Cold Storage   We are so lucky to have cold storage available to us in the form of highly sophisticated refrigerators. Since owning this top-of-the-line model, food is kept cold and lasts longer than an older machine. Ice comes in cubed or snow-flaked forms. Water is chilled and filtered. My model comes with “Dutch doors.” These doors are 2/3 of the length of the overall vertical height. What’s below is the freezer.   I almost didn’t shoot this shot. I felt as if I was exposing something very personal. It’s like catching someone going through your medicine cabinet. I imagined someone examining my (and my wife’s) choices. ”OK, he likes manchego cheese from Spain. Good choice. Should I tell her about the cauliflower gnoochis? How long have those muffins been in there? What kind of wine do they drink? Must be white if it’s cold. Geeish! Someone likes mustard!”   We are so used to taking shots we don’t always think of how the people feel we are photographing. It’s a good reminder to be grateful if someone allows us to take their portrait, come into their life so briefly and record at 1/125 of a second pieces of their soul.

and I will add, I did find myself scrutinizing the contents of the fridge…I don’t know why…and then I read your notes and laughed! This picture throws our own human nature back at us…making us stand back from something we are so close to…
