Today’s adventure was to shoot some clothes being washed or dried. I thought of putting a camera inside a washing machine. When I made up my mind of where I wanted to shoot, I then located a new laundromat. The owner was happy to let me use his new place. I said if you’d like some shots of your business, while I am here I’ll take a few for you in exchange for letting me shoot here. If I used one of the vertical or front-loading washing machines, some light would get inside. And, I could add some flash from outside aimed to the middle of the machine. Or, scrap that idea and see if I could use an on-camera flash plugged into the hot shoe and hope the flash didn’t overexpose the exterior. I must have shot a gazillion images of the soapy water sloshing around the interior of the washing machine. I have great images of the water clinging to the glass door. My colorful selection of clothes never really got dispersed in the interior, as the same three shirts, although bright, stuck together and bullied the other clothes to stay back and away from the front door. Then I thought, If I blurred the motion of the clothes inside a dryer, I would have my shot. This happens a lot, where I start out with one idea, begin shooting, only to find a better solution due to the inspiration provided by the location. It seems like all the preshooting was just a warm up to loosen up my brain to be receptive to new stimuli.
